<p>An easy way to get selenium is by eating two to three Brazil nuts a day. You can also find it in fish, eggs, and mushrooms.</p>

Hot weather doesn’t just mean more sunshine and pool days (although we love that!) It also means your body (and therefore your gut) is working overtime. Whether you’re sweating more, feeling extra tired, or dealing with stubborn digestion, the solution might be in the form of a tasty drink!. Summer mocktails are one of my favorite ways to support hydration, digestion, and energy, without adding another supplement or protocol to your plate.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Why You’re More Bloated, Backed Up, and Burnt Out in the Summer</strong></h2>



<p>Every summer, like clockwork, the heat hits hard, especially if you&#8217;re somewhere like Texas (like me!). Triple-digit temps leave you drenched, overstimulated, and maybe even declaring (again) that you&#8217;re moving to the mountains. But it’s not just sweat and sunburns messing with you. If you’re bloated, constipated, reflux-y, or foggy by mid-afternoon, <a href="https://www.guttogetherprogram.com/minerals/">mineral depletion</a> might be to blame. And guess what? However, what often gets overlooked is the foundational role that <strong>minerals</strong> play in the body’s ability to conceive and sustain a healthy pregnancy. Without a proper balance of essential minerals, hormone production can be impaired, leading to <strong>low progesterone</strong>, <strong>poor egg quality</strong>, and challenges with maintaining a healthy pregnancy.</p>



<p><strong>Magnesium, potassium, sodium, copper, zinc, and iron</strong> are among the most important minerals for <strong>hormonal balance</strong>, <strong>ovarian function</strong>, and <strong>cellular energy</strong>. These minerals contribute to the production of <strong>steroid hormones</strong> like progesterone and help maintain the delicate <strong>balance of estrogen</strong> that’s necessary for conception. Low levels of these minerals can result in <strong>irregular cycles</strong>, <strong>anovulation</strong> (where ovulation doesn’t occur), and <strong>reduced egg quality</strong>, making it more difficult to conceive.</p>



<p>When preparing for <strong>pregnancy</strong>, nourishing yourself <strong>during pregnancy</strong>, and recovering in the <strong>postpartum</strong> period, ensuring optimal mineral balance is critical. Minerals are the foundation of our body’s physiological functions, and they play a vital role in <strong>fertility</strong>, <strong>healthy fetal development</strong>, and <strong>postpartum recovery</strong>. In this blog post, I&#8217;ll share my own HTMA results and how I am supporting myself postpartum, highlighting why focusing on specific minerals can make a significant difference in each phase.</p>

<p>Another key aspect of fertility that often goes under the radar is the role of <strong>stomach acid</strong> in <strong>mineral absorption</strong>. <strong>Stomach acid (hydrochloric acid)</strong> is essential for breaking down food and releasing minerals so they can be absorbed effectively. Without sufficient stomach acid, the body may struggle to absorb crucial minerals like <strong>iron, zinc, and magnesium</strong>, even if you’re eating a nutrient-dense diet. This can lead to <strong>mineral deficiencies</strong> that impair fertility and overall reproductive health.</p>



<p>What’s even more fascinating is that the very minerals that we need for fertility—like zinc and sodium—are also crucial for the <strong>production of stomach acid</strong>. For instance, <strong>zinc</strong> plays a direct role in <strong>stimulating stomach acid production</strong>, while <strong>sodium</strong> is involved in the creation of <strong>chloride</strong>, a key component of hydrochloric acid. It’s a delicate cycle: <strong>without adequate minerals, stomach acid levels drop</strong>, which in turn <strong>further limits mineral absorption</strong>, creating a vicious cycle that can impact fertility.</p>



<p>Supporting both <strong>mineral levels</strong> and <strong>stomach acid production</strong> can create a healthier internal environment for <strong>hormone production</strong> and <strong>egg quality</strong>, making conception more likely and supporting a smooth transition into pregnancy.</p>

<p>In preconception, magnesium also plays a role in <strong>muscle relaxation</strong>, including the <strong>uterine muscles</strong>, supporting a healthy uterine environment for implantation.</p>

Adequate potassium also helps support a <strong>healthy menstrual cycle</strong>, promoting overall reproductive health.</p>

<p>Copper is essential for the formation of <strong>red blood cells</strong>, which helps deliver <strong>oxygen</strong> to tissues, including the reproductive organs. It also plays a role in the production of <strong>collagen</strong>, which helps maintain the structure and function of the ovaries.</p>



<p>Copper is intricately linked with <strong>estrogen metabolism</strong>, and an imbalance in copper levels can lead to issues like <strong>estrogen dominance</strong>, which can impact <strong>ovulation</strong> and <strong>egg quality</strong>. Balanced copper levels are necessary for the production of <strong>healthy eggs</strong> and overall <strong>hormonal harmony</strong>.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Zinc: The Fertility Mineral</strong></h3>



<p>Zinc is often called the “<strong>fertility mineral</strong>” due to its critical role in <strong>egg maturation</strong>, <strong>ovulation</strong>, and <strong>hormone production</strong>. It is involved in the synthesis of <strong>DNA and RNA</strong>, which are essential for <strong>cell division and growth</strong>—a process that’s key to the development of a healthy egg.</p>



<p>Zinc also helps regulate the balance between <strong>estrogen</strong> and <strong>progesterone</strong>, promoting regular menstrual cycles and a <strong>healthy luteal phase</strong>, which is crucial for <strong>implantation</strong> and sustaining early pregnancy. Zinc deficiency has been linked to <strong>anovulation</strong> (the absence of ovulation), so adequate levels are critical for anyone trying to conceive.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Iron: Oxygen and Blood Health</strong></h3>



<p>Iron is vital for the production of <strong>hemoglobin</strong>, the molecule in red blood cells that carries <strong>oxygen</strong> throughout the body, including to the ovaries and uterus. Proper oxygenation is necessary for <strong>egg development</strong> and the <strong>growth of the endometrial lining</strong>, which supports implantation.</p>



<p>Iron deficiency, or <strong>anemia</strong>, can lead to <strong>fatigue</strong>, <strong>poor egg quality</strong>, and <strong>inadequate blood supply</strong> to the reproductive organs, potentially contributing to difficulties in conceiving. Women with <strong>heavy menstrual bleeding</strong> are at an increased risk for iron deficiency, making it even more important to monitor and maintain optimal iron levels during preconception.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Other Relevant Minerals and Cofactors</strong></h3>

<li><strong>Iodine</strong>: This mineral is essential for <strong>thyroid health</strong>, and the thyroid plays a key role in regulating reproductive hormones. <strong>Low iodine levels</strong> can contribute to <strong>hypothyroidism</strong>, which can impair <strong>fertility</strong> and lead to <strong>irregular cycles</strong>.</li>



<li><strong>Selenium</strong>: A powerful <strong>antioxidant</strong> that protects eggs from <strong>oxidative stress</strong> and supports <strong>thyroid function</strong>. Selenium is also important for <strong>detoxification</strong>, helping the body remove harmful substances that can negatively impact fertility.</li>

<p>One important aspect of fertility is ensuring that your body can absorb these essential minerals. <strong>Stomach acid</strong> is necessary for breaking down foods and releasing minerals like iron, zinc, and magnesium for absorption. If stomach acid is low, as it often is for people dealing with chronic stress or gut issues, mineral deficiencies can develop, even when eating a nutrient-dense diet. This is why supporting <strong>gut health</strong> and ensuring <strong>adequate stomach acid production</strong> is key to improving <strong>mineral absorption</strong> and overall fertility.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-ast-global-color-1-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-41e5348267dcc8615bb5046228ff08d5"><strong>My own HTMA Insights during Pre-Conception&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Magnesium, potassium, sodium, and copper</strong> are particularly essential during these stages. My own HTMA results before pregnancy revealed low levels of these minerals, and addressing them has been key to supporting my body through these changes. Here’s why these minerals matter:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Magnesium</strong>: Crucial for relaxation, reducing stress, and supporting muscle function, magnesium also helps with sleep, which is vital during pregnancy and postpartum. It aids in balancing blood sugar levels, a common challenge during pregnancy.</li>



<li><strong>Potassium</strong>: Works alongside sodium to maintain fluid balance, support the adrenal glands, and ensure proper nerve and muscle function. Potassium is also essential for <strong>cellular hydration</strong>, which can impact energy levels and digestion. Potassium is also super helpful at preventing swelling in later stages of pregnancy. </li>



<li><strong>Sodium</strong>: Essential for maintaining proper blood volume and supporting adrenal function, especially as the body adapts to the increased demands of pregnancy. Adequate sodium helps prevent <strong>dizziness</strong> and <strong>fatigue</strong>, both of which are common during pregnancy.</li>



<li><strong>Copper</strong>: Plays a vital role in the development of <strong>red blood cells</strong> and is important for fetal growth and brain development. Copper is also necessary for maintaining a healthy balance of <strong>estrogen</strong> and <strong>progesterone</strong>, which are key hormones for fertility and pregnancy.</li>
</ul>



<p>Here is how I supported each of these minerals during preconception:&nbsp;</p>



<p>During preconception, I focused on replenishing the minerals that my HTMA showed I was low in. For magnesium, I used <strong>Mag Soothe by Jigsaw</strong> at night and included <strong>magnesium-rich foods</strong> like dark leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, and almonds. For potassium, I drank a <strong>Pickleball cocktail</strong> 1-2 times per day and added <strong>cream of tartar</strong> to a <strong>mineral mocktail</strong>, plus I made sure to include a <strong>potassium-rich food</strong> (like bananas, avocados, or potatoes) with each meal. To boost sodium levels, I prioritized <strong>salting my food</strong> and often used <strong>Redmond Relyte</strong> for a daily mocktail. For copper, I took <strong>Oyster Zinc</strong> and upped my intake of <strong>copper-rich foods</strong> such as liver (I used the force of nature meats with liver mixed in), and dark chocolate. This balanced approach helped me support my body’s needs during this time.</p>

<p>Beyond looking at individual mineral levels, understanding the <strong>ratios</strong> between them can offer deeper insights into how the body is functioning. My pre-conception HTMA revealed the following ratios, which highlighted areas that needed support:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>High Ca/P ratio</strong>: Indicates <strong>stress and burnout</strong> and can point to <strong>low thyroid function</strong>. This is particularly important when trying to conceive, as thyroid health plays a role in <strong>hormone regulation</strong> and <strong>ovulation</strong>.</li>



<li><strong>High Ca/K ratio</strong>: Known as the &#8220;<strong>thyroid ratio</strong>,&#8221; this ratio can indicate a slowed thyroid, which can affect <strong>metabolic rate</strong>, <strong>energy levels</strong>, and the ability to maintain a <strong>healthy pregnancy</strong>.</li>



<li><strong>High Zn/Cu ratio</strong>: Indicates an imbalance between <strong>zinc</strong> and <strong>copper</strong>, which can impact <strong>immune function</strong>, <strong>hormone balance</strong>, and <strong>inflammation levels</strong>. A balanced Zn/Cu ratio is critical during pregnancy, as it helps support <strong>immune health</strong> and <strong>healthy fetal development</strong>.</li>



<li><strong>Low Na/Mg ratio</strong>: Reflects <strong>adrenal stress</strong> and difficulty maintaining <strong>electrolyte balance</strong>. This balance is key during pregnancy to support <strong>hydration</strong> and <strong>energy</strong> levels.</li>



<li><strong>High Ca/Mg ratio</strong>: Indicates a potential <strong>calcium dominance</strong>, which can affect <strong>muscle tension</strong> and <strong>blood sugar regulation</strong>. Balancing this ratio is important for <strong>muscle relaxation</strong> and preventing conditions like <strong>leg cramps </strong>during pregnancy.</li>
</ul>

However, many individuals find that despite taking high doses of magnesium, they still struggle with constipation. This blog post will explore the reasons why magnesium alone may not be effective and how Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) can provide critical insights into underlying imbalances that could be hindering your progress.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Why High-Dose Magnesium Isn’t Working</strong></h3>



<p>One of the primary reasons high doses of magnesium may not be producing the desired effect is due to low levels of other critical minerals, particularly potassium and sodium. <p>To illustrate how addressing mineral imbalances can transform digestive health, let’s take a closer look at <strong>Client A</strong>.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Background</strong></h4>



<p>Client A was struggling with persistent constipation and had been taking an impressive <strong>1200 mg of magnesium</strong> daily in hopes of alleviating her symptoms. Despite this high intake, she continued to experience <strong>rock-hard, pebbly stools</strong> that left her feeling uncomfortable and frustrated. In addition to her magnesium supplementation, she had tried various interventions, including prescription motility medications, all of which failed to provide relief.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Insights from HTMA</strong></h4>



<p>When Client A decided to undergo <a href="https://www.guttogetherprogram.com/what-is-htma-testing/"><strong>Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA)</strong></a>, the results revealed critical insights into her mineral status. Notably, her <strong>potassium</strong> levels were extremely low, and her <strong>sodium</strong> levels were also deficient.</p>

<p>In Client A&#8217;s case, the low levels of both potassium and sodium likely contributed to her ongoing constipation. The magnesium she was taking, while beneficial for some, was not effective in this scenario because it was unable to work synergistically with potassium and sodium to promote healthy bowel function.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Solution</strong></h4>



<p>Armed with this new information from her HTMA results, Client A and her practitioner developed a tailored approach to her health. They decided to <strong>decrease her magnesium intake</strong> significantly, recognizing that her body was not utilizing it effectively due to the mineral imbalances. Instead, they focused on <strong>supporting her sodium and potassium levels </strong>through dietary changes and targeted supplementation.</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Dietary Adjustments:</strong> Client A was encouraged to increase her intake of potassium-rich foods, such as bananas, sweet potatoes, avocados, and leafy greens. For sodium, incorporating natural sea salt into her meals helped restore balance.</li>



<li><strong>Supplementation:</strong> To further support her mineral status, they introduced potassium supplements under professional guidance. This was done cautiously to avoid any rapid fluctuations in her mineral levels.</li>
</ul>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Positive Outcomes</strong></h4>



<p>Within a few weeks of implementing these changes, Client A began to notice significant improvements in her bowel movements. With the enhanced mineral balance, she experienced:</p>

<li><strong>Better, More Complete Bowel Movements:</strong> Client A&#8217;s stools became more regular, well-formed, and easier to pass, alleviating the discomfort she had been enduring for so long.</li>



<li><strong>Reduced Dependency on Magnesium:</strong> By addressing the root causes of her constipation, she was able to cut back on her magnesium intake (by more than HALF!) significantly without sacrificing her bowel health. This not only saved her money but also reduced her risk of potential side effects from high-dose magnesium.</li>

<p>Client A&#8217;s journey highlights the importance of a comprehensive approach to digestive health. While magnesium can be a helpful tool for managing constipation, it is essential to consider the role of other minerals like potassium and sodium. By using HTMA to identify and address these imbalances, individuals can pave the way for more effective treatment strategies and achieve lasting relief from constipation.</p>
